Residence on the Maine Coast

Set atop the rocky coastline of Cape Neddick, Maine, this Lighthouse Sauna sits on a property overlooking the Atlantic, where coastal air and long winters directly impact the need for intentional material selection and build technique. The client, a seasoned sauna user, sought a structure that could endure the wide range the elements experienced along Maine's coast, while feeling natural to the existing architecture and landscape.

They approached Harbor in search of a sauna that would match the main residence, clad entirely in cedar shakes. They selected the Lighthouse Sauna in our Weathered Grey Cedar, positioned overlooking the ocean below through the expansive glass window this sauna provides. While just steps away from the main residence, the sauna feels remote, set slightly apart to offer quiet, uninterrupted views of the ocean below. Private beach access to the shoreline below makes for easy cold plunges year-round, turning the edge of the property into a natural setting for contrast therapy.

The Lighthouse Sauna draws inspiration from the working buildings that dot the nearby coastline and have stood for decades within these same coastal environments. The use of cedar and brass accent pieces throughout this sauna speak directly to the architectural history behind Maine's maritime heritage, guiding both the materiality and form.

With the addition of this sauna, the home becomes more than a place to enjoy life along the coast- it’s a fully immersive wellness retreat, designed for the decades to come.
