Iska Sauna

Overview

The Iska Sauna is inspired in form and function by the ice fishing huts and warming structures that have long provided shelter through the coldest winters of the Northeast and Scandinavia. The Iska integrates a slightly more modern approach in design, but thoughtfully blends time honored material and technique to provide proper escape even in the coldest of temperatures. The Iska Sauna comes standard in cedar cladding stained with Black Viking Linseed Oil, a trusted centuries-old Scandinavian building treatment specifically known for its protection in harsh coastal and winter climates. Featuring an expansive glass window and smaller window to the side (not pictured), we designed this sauna to create a quiet retreat that provides you with connection to your surroundings.

The Iska seats 2-4 people and features a HUUM CLIFF 6kW electric heating element. Exceptional heat retention is ensured by using ROCKWOOL insulation with a vapor barrier. Ventilation follows traditional principles and is achieved passively from the floor, with airflow exiting through a sliding vent under the top bench.

Antique brass fixtures accent the exterior, tying together our vision for blending the centuries-old practice of sauna with the maritime heritage that has long inspired our work. Just like the structures that endure in northern landscapes, we envision the Iska aging timelessly wherever you place it, providing warmth for the decades ahead.

Featured Exterior Treatment

Black Viking Linseed Oil

Black linseed oil paint has been used for centuries in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, where extreme weather conditions demanded durable, protective finishes for wooden structures. The Vikings and later Nordic builders relied on linseed oil-based treatments to protect their homes, barns, and boats from the harsh coastal and winter climates.

Unlike modern synthetic paints, linseed oil paint soaks into the wood rather than forming a brittle outer layer. This allows the wood to breathe, preventing moisture buildup, cracking, and rot, which were critical concerns in historic wooden buildings.

We use Black Viking Linseed Oil from Earth and Flax as an exterior treatment for the Iska Sauna, embracing the same principles of durability, aesthetics, and longevity that have been trusted in Nordic regions for generations. Whether left to weather naturally or treated with linseed oil, the Iska will develop a timeless patina, ensuring it remains as visually striking as it is resilient.

Maritime Grade Durability

Brass is a material with a rich history supporting maritime builds, utilized purposefully to endure harsh weather and corrosive environments. We thoughtfully sourced brass detail pieces to tie together our vision for the Iska and give a subtle nod to the maritime legacy of the Northeast.
